For decades, social psychologists have studied the many ways people form, maintain, and change
their attitudes. Attitude typically, though not always, influences behavior. As such, politicians,
advertisers, and others use the art of persuasion—an attempt to change an attitude—to create
impactful messages intended to change behavior. Awareness about how attitudes are formed and
influenced can have important implications for individuals’ behaviors as citizens, consumers,
friends, workers, and family members.

For this Discussion, you examine messages that you have seen or heard within the past year and
consider how these messages attempt to be persuasive.

Select a persuasive message (i.e., a message that is persuasive to you or tries to be
persuasive) which has been released, published, or posted within the past 12 months
such as a(n):

political message,
public service campaign,
commercial on television, radio, or online,
advertisement found in a print or online magazine or newspaper, or op-ed.

The message should not be a news story if the news story is an objective report
with the intent to inform and not persuade.

In the first line of your post, identify the topic, issue, or product addressed in your
chosen persuasive message.
Briefly describe the message (e.g., advertisement, campaign, commercial) you selected
and who you think is its target audience. Provide a link to the message if you found it
online.
Based on your viewing of Professor Q (2023) video (
v=axTPaPgluLc) and reading of Jhangiani and Tarry (2022)
(chapter/changing-attitudes-through-persuasion/) ,
explain how the message attempts to form and/or change attitudes or behaviors. Be
specific and provide at least one example.
Explain whether you think the message succeeds in being persuasive, and why.

To demonstrate what you learned this week, be sure to support your work with information
from the Learning Resources.

Be sure to review the Week 2 Discussion Rubric to understand the specific grading criteria
your Instructor will use to evaluate your work.

Respond to at least one colleague’s initial post, who selected a topic, issue, or product
different than the one you chose, in one or more of the following ways:

Propose an alternate explanation for why the message is or is not effective in changing
attitudes.
Imagine a different target audience and identify that target audience. What would you
change about the message to make it more effective for the new target audience?

To demonstrate what you learned this week, be sure to support your work with information
from the Learning Resources.
