Module 1: Discussion 2

SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT Discussion 2: Provocations: Inspiring Fascination and Learning

Provocations involve open-ended, thought-provoking changes in children’s environments that inspire curiosity, exploration, and discovery. They challenge and extend children’s current knowledge and perhaps their capabilities. For this Discussion, you have the opportunity to prepare and discuss a provocation experience with a small group of preschool-age children. What might inspire children’s curiosity related to the topic of the unit you are designing? How might you learn more about children’s interests as you listen, observe, and engage?

Post your response to the following:

  • Your unit topic and/or essential question or questions
  • A description of your provocation
  • Ways in which children engaged in your provocation, i.e., how your provocation may have inspired children’s curiosity and engaged them in exploration and discovery, and/or how this provocation challenge may have extended children’s current knowledge and perspectives
  • How you might adjust the provocation you offered children based on your observations

Module 3 Discussion Question

By Wednesday of Week 6, post your ViDEO, REVIEW AT LEAST 3 OF YOUR COLLEAGUE’S VIDEOS, AND THEN POST YOUR response to the following questions:

  • What was the title and author of the book you chose to read, and how did it connect to your unit and learning experience?
  • Based on your understanding of the criteria for quality children’s literature, how did this book represent quality?
  • What strategies did you use to ensure you were creating a special experience and promoting children’s engagement.
  • What have you learned about why reading aloud with young children valuable and important?
