Part 1: The DSM-5 system for diagnosis is based on pathology and the medical model of mental

illness, whereas counseling is grouded in the wellness model. Why must counselors learn to

diagnose clinical disorders? Post and respond to at least two other classmates’ posts. Provide

evidence of content knowledge and critical thought. These should be well thought out and

comprehensive. (reframe from quotes, citations, references) (Max 200 words)

Part 2: respond to two student’s post (simplified please)

Student 1: Although counseling operates in the wellness model, we must, as counselors, be able

to diagnose clients based on the DSM-5. Primarily, diagnosis is used to facilitate the most

effective treatment for our clients. Diagnosis provides useful information for decision-making,

helping us make more appropriate treatment strategies, as they can be directly based on a

client’s specific diagnosis. Diagnosis also plays an important role in anticipating the course of a

client’s disorder, allowing us to plan intentional treatment options. Diagnosis also functions as a

common language among various healthcare professionals, aiding in clear communication and

collaboration during a client’s treatment. A diagnosis is often also necessary for insurance

companies to cover a client’s mental health services, making counseling more financially

accessible.

Student 2: here are many reasons why it is important for counselors to learn how to diagnose

clinical disorders so that we can best serve our clients. Firstly, diagnosis can be a very helpful

tool when developing a treatment plan for a client. If we are able to assess the client’s

symptoms and accurately diagnose them, there is plenty of research available that can guide us

in deciding on a treatment plan. Diagnosis is also helpful in situations where we put together

interdisciplinary teams to help a client. By knowing how to diagnose and knowing the more

formal language that is used by other professionals, we are better able to communicate

effectively as a team. Furthermore, diagnosis is sometimes necessary for the client to be able to

continue their counseling journey. Many insurance companies may refuse to cover expenses for

counseling unless there is a clinical diagnosis. Therefore, it is often in the client’s best interest to

receive a diagnosis.
