Pop Culture and Relationships Assignment Instructions

Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to explore, summarize, and critically analyze a popular song (from any era) as it relates to the information provided in your textbook in Chapter 11: Attraction and Intimacy. Your goal for this paper is to examine lyrics from a scholarly perspective and write a thoughtful comparison of song lyrics viewed through the lens of Social Psychology.

The song must include lyrics that:

· Describe at least two concepts related to attraction or a relationship found in Chapter 11 of our textbook.

· Contain no profanity or explicit references.

Critical Review Instructions

The song analysis will examine one song that describes at least two concepts related to attraction and relationships found in Chapter 11 of our textbook. General guidelines for the length of each section are included below. Remember that the assignment requires 500-700 words in addition to the title page and reference citation.
Pop Culture and Relationships Sample
Paper is provided. The analysis must include the following:

1. APA-formatted title page.

2. Title of the paper appears on the first line of page 2 (centered, bold, title case capitalization).

3. An introductory paragraph follows the title of the paper.

4. Section 1: Identification and Summary of the Song
(approximately one paragraph). Include the following:

· Title, Artist, Genre

· Brief description/summary of the song.

5. Section 2: Discussion and Comparison of Concepts
(approximately 2-3 paragraphs). Include at least 2 concepts from our textbook (cited) and explain how you are connecting these concepts to the lyrics of your song.

6. Section 3: Analysis of Strengths and Limitations
(approximately 1-2 paragraphs). Here are some content analysis suggestions. Please write in paragraph form. You do not need to answer all questions but be sure that you address this section with depth and detail.

· What did the songwriter(s) do well?

· What aspect might be missing or could be included to strengthen the message?

· What are the implications of the lyrics? Helpful? Harmful? Why?

· Do the songwriter(s) promote faulty beliefs?

· Do the songwriter(s) help address typical stages/concepts that are key to relationships?

· Note that these strengths and limitations should be directly related/supported by concepts found in our textbook related to attraction and relationships.

· This is not an opinion paper: the words, “I really like this song…” OR “I really do not like this song…” should not be included.

7. Current APA-formatted reference page

8. Appendix with your song lyrics; remember, no profanity or explicit content.

Structure Requirements:

· Use APA current edition undergraduate guidelines. (Include a title page, section headings, and appropriate citations).

· Include a reference page as citations within your paper are expected.

· The body text must include 500-700 words.

· You may use direct quotes from the song, but do not include direct quotes from our textbook. Instead, paraphrase appropriately.

· Turnitin will be used for this assignment.

· Correct spelling/grammar is required.

· Please refer to the grading rubric for additional guidance.
