For this lab, you will write 2 body paragraphs for Essay 2 in support of your thesis and work on revising them. Review the Essay 2 guide from week 3 to prepare a thesis statement before beginning this assignment.
If you chose Option 1, you will write paragraphs related to Grandin’s fixed or growth mindset. If you chose Option 2, you will write paragraphs to at least two of Hallowell’s 5 steps. After writing your paragraphs, use the guidelines below to revise your paragraphs before turning them in.
What do you think is the argument are you trying to present here? Have you accomplished this in your paragraphs? What questions might a reader have? Make sure your revision answers these questions.
Look at the quotes you used. Are they too long, or too short? Are the quotes being used to help explain your argument, or are you trying to change your argument to support the quotes? Make sure you revise so that your quotes are demonstrating your argument and not the other way around.
- Look at anything that is quoted in the body paragraphs. Did you use appropriate introductory of “set up” language when introducing a quote, a summary, or a paraphrase? This means, the essay should have some language that makes clear to the reader that a quote, summary, or paraphrase is about to be used. Examples include “According to,” “in the article,” and “as stated by.” Have you used language to set up the research materials whenever you quote/summarize/paraphrase something? Mark all the cases in the essay where a quote/summary/paraphrase was used without appropriate language to frame the research and then fix this in your revision.
- Are you using synthesis language to make connections between sources? If not, mark with an X the places where synthesis language should be used. Wherever you put an X, make a suggestion for appropriate synthesis language you could use and then revise your paragraph.
