Vignette 2: Ethan, the Angry Athlete

  • Age: 13
  • Grade: 7th
  • Family dynamics: Ethan is the younger of two siblings. His older sister, Samantha (17), is preparing for college, often monopolizing their single mother’s attention. Ethan’s father left the family when he was 4 years old, and his mother works two jobs to make ends meet.

Issues at school:

Ethan has been acting out in class, frequently arguing with teachers and getting into fights with peers. He is a talented basketball player but was recently benched for poor behavior. Teachers describe him as “angry and defiant” and have referred him for counseling after he shoved a desk in frustration during a math quiz. Issues at home:

At home, Ethan feels neglected. His mother is often too tired to engage with him, and he resents his sister for the attention she receives. He spends most of his time alone, playing video games or practicing basketball. Recently, he has started to yell at his mother and sister, mimicking the behaviors he exhibits at school.

Write a 2 – 3 page treatment plan that supports the child through the counseling process. The treatment plan should incorporate all five stages of the Sequentially Planned Integrative Counseling for Children (SPICC) model. For each stage of the SPICC, choose at least one media/activity. Provide details to justify your choice. (Tip) Focusing on the goals and benefits for each media may support your justification. In addition, describe how you will utilize each media/activity within the phase.  You may use Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri fonts.
