As you read in the first article, the new president of SRJC describes the difficulties that many students in Sonoma County face to attend college. It is her intention to help students feel that they belong in the community.

Awareness and knowledge of history and cultural differences allow us to build a world that is more inclusive and fair. In the second article you read about how Sonoma County is conducting a pilot project to introduce Ethnic Studies classes in high school. The article provides details of how a Healdsburg school is offering this opportunity to its students. We know that this is not the case in every state in the country.

Reflect on the article. Do your own research to complement your information and answer the following questions:

1. What is the rationale of some state governments to prohibit the teaching of ethnic studies courses in public school?

2. In your opinion, why is this happening?

3. In your opinion, what will be the consequences of such prohibitions?

The chapter from the book “The inner work of social racial justice” gives us a particular perspective on how to become more aware of race. Answer the following questions:

4. In a paragraph, summarize the main message in this chapter.

5.  What is the connection between class and race?

6. What is color blindness and what is the problem with it?

7. What does the author propose as a solution for racial problems at the individual level?

8. What is your opinion about this chapter?
