Part 1: Short Answer – Answer *EACH* of the following short-answer questions in no fewer than two paragraphs, each with three to five sentences.

1.) Identify one instance of irony in “Howl.” Explain the author’s intent and what makes this usage “ironic.”

2.) Note that “Howl” is written in three large segments, each with their own rhyme, meter, or rhythm. Choose one stanza and explain why the poet chose the scheme he chose. What effect does this scheme give to the reader? Cite specific passages.

3.) Explain why you think “Howl” is “for Carl Solomon.” (Hint: You’ll have to understand why Mother was finally asterisked.)

Part 2: Long Answer – Answer the following prompt in a 2-4 paragraph short essay (950-1200words).

In “Howl,” Allen Ginsberg makes multiple references to human sexuality, religion, and mental health. Choose one of these three themes. Once you’ve picked one, then in an essay totaling between 950 and 1200 words, a.) identify the prevailing image(s) the poet employs in Part I; AND b.) then explain how the theme you’ve chosen is brought to a close in the SECOND and THIRD parts of the poem. CITE SPECIFIC PASSAGES to back up your argument.
