M.W – “Liberty refers to being free from oppressive constraints. Freedom, closely related, encompasses an individual’s ability to act according to their own will. The framers incorporated civil liberties into the Constitution, particularly through the Bill of Rights. Civil liberties are freedoms granted to citizens that protect them from certain types of government interference and prevent the government from becoming too powerful (Greenberg & Page, 2018).

Environmental risks like pollution, climate change, and hazardous materials can lead to health problems for the public. A pressing one today is still air pollution. It has caused respiratory issues such as asthma, COPD, cardiovascular issues, and even cancer. According to the WHO (2024), there are seven million premature deaths yearly due to air pollution. This can be from car emissions, household waste, and industrial exposure, which most affect vulnerable children and the elderly.

The government is involved in regulations and policies. Legislation creates and enforces laws that limit emissions and waste to ensure compliance with environmental standards. As mentioned in a previous discussion with the EPA and the Clean Air Act, implementing regulations on allowable levels of pollutants improved air quality. The government often collaborates with research institutions to monitor and assess environmental health risks.

Citizens can regulate environmental health risks based on the Bill of Rights by utilizing the rights outlined in the document to mitigate risks that threaten communities. Citizens have a responsibility to monitor and influence governance. The foundational framework empowers people to assert their rights. The First Amendment, which includes freedom of speech and religion, petitioning the government, and assembling, is essential for advocacy. Collaborating can pressure legislators to reconsider policies and amend them. Due process is crucial for those seeking fair enforcement of regulations. Engaging in activism and using legal channels equips citizens to stand against environmental injustices and advocate for policies that protect our communities and uphold the principles in the Bill of Rights. (Doe &Rowell, 2021).”
