Chapter 5 Prompt

You have read about both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation this week. Explain the similarities and differences between them. Consider your top three motivations for going to school, going to work etc., then respond to the following:

· Consider your three motivations and describe if each of them is intrinsic or extrinsic motivation.

· What role do you see these types of motivation serving in your life (e.g. do you see any patterns, are they all one type, etc.)?

· Consider the argument against extrinsic motivation (that it decreases desires to engage in the behavior, that it decreases creativity, etc.), do you see it coming into play here?  Or do you see it serving a momentary role with hopes the behavior will eventually become intrinsically motivated?

· Have there been times you have been unmotivated? How could you have put either intrinsic or extrinsic motivation in place to change that?

Chapter 6 Prompt…

Consider what you have learned about operant and classical conditioning. In both cases, we are seeing how much of what we see/do is associated with outcomes. One place where both types of conditioning are often on display is commercials and advertisements. Select a commercial or advertisement, then:

· Describe the Ad or Commercial.

· First explain how you see classical conditioning displayed (what is the CS, US, UR, CR).

· Then explain how you see operant conditioning at play (behavior, reinforcement, etc.)

· Did either of these forms of conditioning motivate you to purchase this type of product?
