Ask Three- What Makes You, You?

Ask three people you do not know well: “What makes you, you?.” Consider asking individuals you come into contact with during service-learning hours, on campus, or just out and about in the community. The less you know them, the better strangers are encouraged

Tips

· Be prepared with probing questions and examples

· “Describe an event or experience that shaped who you are”

· “If you had to pick one word that described you, what is it and why”

· It may feel awkward to ask, but most people are very open to answering the question

· Practice with someone you do know well first

Purpose

Engaging others in these discussions prompts you to reflect on your qualities, experiences, and perspectives, fostering self-awareness and personal growth. By sharing what makes them unique, people can find common ground and build stronger, more meaningful connections with others with similar or complementary qualities.

Reflection Instructions

Write a 1-page reflection exploring your personal experiences, thoughts, and feelings on the activity. Describe the process you went through, who you asked, how they responded, the challenges you faced, and how you overcame them. Analyze what you learned about your communication skills. Avoid only describing what happened but analyzing and interpreting the experience.
