Part A (AS)

This week’s videos give us a lot to think about.  Please discuss some of your take-aways from watching them.  This may include the following:

Do infants really have an innate sense of right and wrong from an early age?  Do they also have a natural tendency of bias towards those who are like them?  If true, what might that mean for parents and educators?

The Doll Project videos are also thought-provoking.  How have the children in the first clip been socialized to think about race and identity?  Those experiments were done some time ago.  Do you think that things have changed?  How much do you think that structural racism in our society still affects children’s self-concept?  What can parents and educators do to help children develop a positive sense of self?  What can parents and educators do to combat the effects of racism on young children?  What impact could that have on a child’s future?  On our society?  How can an educator be sure that they are creating a non-racist classroom?

Part B (C)

Have you ever felt like your feelings or reactions were influenced by things you didn’t consciously notice? How do you think unconscious processing like in priming experiments, affects our daily lives.

Can you explain the difference between “vision for action” as described by Goodale and Milner? Why do you think understanding the difference matters when we think about consciousness?

What do you think Ekman’s research on universal emotions shows about how we express feelings? Do you believe there could be unique emotions in different cultures that we might not recognize.

Part C (A)

Then vs. Now vs. Future

As the world goes on, life has changed significantly within the last 50 years; it will continue to change in the next 50 years. Reflect on your adolescence. Think about the health topics that are currently affecting adolescents today. Consider the differences. Then, describe what you think adolescence will look like in 25 and 50 years from now. As we do have a range of ages within our class, this will give us many perspectives!

For your initial post:

· Describe some of the health topics that affected adolescents during your adolescence.

· Describe the health topics that are currently affecting adolescents today.

· Discuss the differences.

· Describe what you think adolescence will look like in 25 AND 50 years from now.
