As discussed in the textbook Chapter 10, most cultures emphasize different characteristics as valued and important for boys/men and girls/women. They also differ in how flexible these expectations are, and how accepting they are of norm violations.

  • How were you socialized with respect to norms for masculinity, femininity, and androgyny?
  • What cultural values were communicated to you about what was valued and what was to be avoided in your gendered behavior?    
  • How do you see norms changing in the cultures with which you are most familiar?
