Assignment: What is Interdisciplinarity? (50 points, 5% of final grade)

Purpose: This assignment helps you clarify your understanding of interdisciplinarity and how to approach an interdisciplinary research project. You will need this understanding to effectively complete your Applied Final Project in this course.

Instructions:

You have chosen an interdisciplinary major, and the final project in this course is designed to be interdisciplinary, as well. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of interdisciplinarity in preparation for your final project.

In approximately 300 words, respond to the following. Be sure to support your answers with this week’s resources and/or resources from previous Social Sciences courses. You do not need to do any additional research for this assignment.

1. What is the difference between interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity?

2. Reflect on your own academic experience by describing an issue or problem you have examined or could examine using an interdisciplinary perspective. You can use the issue or problem you chose for your Applied Final Project in this course if you would like. Briefly explain how an interdisciplinary approach enhanced or could enhance your understanding of the topic.

3. Why might you choose not to use an interdisciplinary approach to a problem? Provide at least two reasons or conditions.

You should use at least two course resources in your assignment. Be sure to cite your sources in APA and provide a list of references in APA format.
