There are differences between phonological awareness and phonic skills. Phonological skills involve the student’s ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken language. Therefore, the student must identify and work with sounds in the world, syllables, and phoneme levels to show that he or she has a phonological awareness. Some of the main sounds that a student with phonological awareness must understand include segmenting, alliteration, rhyming, and blending sounds. Secondly, phonic skills on the other hand involve assessing the ability of the student to understand how letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) relate in a written language. When assessing the student on their phonic skills, they must be able to decode words through the application of letter-sound knowledge. Therefore, a student must recognize some of the common phonics patterns if they have a good phonic skills ability.

2. When assessing phonic skills, “in context” and “out of context” it is important to focus on various key significance of each. First, when assessing phonics skills “in context” the teacher focuses on assessing the student’s ability to apply the knowledge of phonics in a connected context when reading. A student who can effectively apply this knowledge can have the ability to comprehend not only reading but also real-life situations. Consequently, when assessing these skills “out of context” the teacher will investigate the ability of the student to decode words in isolation without having to rely on the whole sentence in the reading context. A student who can adequately identify these phonics shows the ability to identify phonic patterns that need extra concentration. Thus, concerning phonological and phonics awareness, the student has a good ability to identify and differentiate them both in context and out of context.
