Assessment questions and appropriate interventions related to the Neighborhood and Built Environment category focus on individual and community health outcomes. As a nurse practitioner (NP), we can work toward influencing patient’s daily behaviors, environmental exposures, and social interactions to achieve improved patient health and well-being. The related objective I selected from the Healthy People 2030 website to address Neighborhood and Built Environment is titled: Reduce the rate of minors and young adults committing violent crimes – AH-10. The current baseline is 249.0 arrests per 100,000 adolescents and young adults aged 10 to 24 years, with a target reduction set at 199.2 arrests per 100,000. This crime reduction is vital for creating safer, healthier communities and the goal of public health interventions (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d.).

NPs have a fundamental role in addressing socioeconomic determinants of health, such as youth violence, through comprehensive community engagement and targeted assessments. These assessments are vital insights for the effectiveness of violence prevention programs and for identifying resource gaps that support at-risk youth. For example, community health initiatives can enhance awareness of educational programs on conflict resolution and stress reduction and promote violence prevention strategies like improved lighting and surveillance in high-risk areas (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d.).

As further support, the study by Shah et al. (2019) analyzed data from several hundred Local Health Departments (LHDs) to highlight how they play a critical role in meeting national standards with community health assessments and community improvement plans for addressing public health issues effectively. NPs can not only contribute to this community planning process by providing insights into the health needs observed in the clinical setting but can also ensure that the comprehensive strategies are inclusive of the needs of diverse patient populations.
