You are to write a journal-like book review of 1,000 to 1,250 words for a scholarly text on gender history. A successful review will address the following questions:

  1. What is the thesis? Does the author successfully defend their thesis? How?
  2. What is the book about? Summarize the main ideas.
  3. What is the purpose of the book? Does the book do what it says it is going to do?
  4. How is the book organized? Is the organization effective? If not, how would you improve it?
  5. What is the author’s contribution to scholarship on this topic? Does the book relate to a current debate or trend in the field and if so, how? How does the book compare to other books in the field? In answering these questions, you will need to explore additional sources, which may include those outside of the GCU library. Examine at least two other sources.
  6. Why was gender explored by historians at this specific time in history and in this context? Is this an important tool or exploration in the field of history?
  7. How does the author use others’ historical interpretations to analyze events and themes?
  8. How does this book reflect the historical context of the time in which it was written?
  9. What are your thoughts about the book?

10.  Examine the book in relation to the article, “Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis,” in this topic’s readings.
